Preschool dance in Tea

A first dance class, with you in the next room

Curtsy is a small studio for ages 2 to 5. Dancers wave scarves in a circle, step into hoops and learn their first ballet and tap steps while a grown-up waits in the waiting room.

Find your dancer's age, then pick a day

Every age has classes on Monday and on Saturday. Ballet and tap is one class, half ballet and half tap, for ages 3 to 5. A grown-up waits in the waiting room for every class.

How a first class works

  1. 01

    Step 1: Ask a question

Call, text or use the form. Tehya or Fidencia will tell you which class fits your dancer's age and answer anything else you'd like to know.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Try a class

Pick a class on the schedule and book it. Wear leggings or tights, with bare feet or ballet slippers, and arrive ten minutes early so a teacher can meet you at the door.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Register

If the class feels right, register on the registration page. It asks for a grown-up's contact details and who may collect your dancer, and nothing on this website does.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The first day

A teacher meets your dancer at the studio door and you settle in the waiting room. When class ends, the teacher hands your dancer back to you at the same door.

Where grown-ups wait, and when they may watch

Plain answers to what families ask before a first class.

Watching class and recitals

Parents wait in the waiting room while class is on, so the dancers can look to their teacher. In the first full week of every month, the door opens for the last ten minutes of each class and families watch from the doorway. The May recital is for families to watch, from seats at the front.

Drop-off and pickup

A teacher meets every dancer at the studio door and brings them in. A grown-up stays in the waiting room for the whole class, and at the end the teacher hands the dancer back at the same door. Tell us who else may collect, and we ask for ID from anyone we don't know.

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

When to keep your child home

Keep your dancer home with a fever, a rash or a stomach bug, and bring them back after a full day without symptoms. Message the studio and we will find a make-up class.

What to wear and bring

Leggings or tights and a plain top, with bare feet or ballet slippers. Tutus are welcome and never needed. Please bring a water bottle with a lid, and hair up if it is long.

Safety routines

  • A grown-up always next door

A parent or guardian waits in the waiting room for every class, and the teacher hands each dancer back to a named grown-up at the door.

  • A helper for the twos

Every class for twos has a teacher and a helper, and the helper stays for the whole class.

  • The floor and the cubbies

The floor is wood, swept before the first class, and the hooks and cubbies sit at a dancer's height. Scarves and hoops are washed every week.

  • Telling us things

Tell us about allergies or an injury before the first class. We ask privately once you register, and never on the website form.

The teachers

Three teachers, one small studio

Every dancer meets all three in the first term, and every teacher has a background check and CPR and first aid training.

  • Tehya Pourier, director, sitting on a bench with a pair of ballet slippers in her hand

    Tehya Pourier

    Director and teacher

Tehya opened Curtsy so that a two-year-old's first dance class could be gentle and unhurried. She teaches the twos and the weekday ballet and tap classes, and she is the one who meets you at the door.

  • Fidencia Zertuche, teacher, in a grey cardigan with one hand on the barre

    Fidencia Zertuche

    Teacher, creative movement

Fidencia leads creative movement for threes and fours, with scarves, hoops and a lot of music. She keeps the circle moving and knows every dancer's favorite song by the second week.

  • Dominik Rebollar, teacher, reaching one arm out in a sunlit studio

    Dominik Rebollar

    Teacher, ballet and tap

Dominik teaches the afternoon ballet and tap classes. He started in tap, and every class ends with a short rhythm that the whole group can clap.

From families

What parents tell us

“The waiting room is cozy, and the teacher told us exactly when we could watch. Nobody had to guess what to expect.”

Jocelynn K.Parent of a three-year-old

“The class was thirty minutes, and a teacher met us at the door. It was just the right length for a two-year-old.”

Dagny O.Parent of a two-year-old

“I liked that the extras were explained before we signed up. The costume was simple and we knew when it was due.”
